A new leak from Majin Bu on X purports to show the battery for Apple's upcoming iPhone 17 Air, offering a closer look at the component's capacity, materials, and design. The images reveal a steel case and an estimated 2900mAh capacity—a combination that points to a trade-off between a slim profile and battery life.
The battery's capacity of around 2900mAh is right in line with a previous leak that pointed to a 2800mAh cell for the phone's 5.5mm design. That super-slim build, which some have called "scary thin" in hands-on videos with dummy units, has reportedly led Apple to develop a dedicated battery case to offset the smaller battery.
The images also reveal a new steel casing, a material first used on the iPhone 16 Pro to improve heat dissipation and durability. The L-shaped module has precisely welded edges and appears designed to fit alongside a smaller logic board.
It's another piece of the puzzle for the iPhone 17 lineup, which has been taking shape through numerous leaks. Just recently, leaker Sonny Dickson shared images of dummy units showcasing the full color lineup for all four models, including a new orange finish for the Pro series.
Majin Bu also suggests that the combination of the steel case and smaller capacity could enable a more advanced thermal management system, possibly allowing for faster charging speeds.
Update Bu has issued a correction to this claim, indicating the images shared are actually of the US and Chinese version of the battery for the iPhone 17 Pro.
