Apple today unveiled the new iPhone 17, introducing a larger 6.3-inch ProMotion display, a redesigned 48MP camera system with an innovative Center Stage front camera, and the new A19 chip with major performance gains. The device also debuts Ceramic Shield 2 for 3x better scratch resistance, starts with double the storage at 256GB, and comes with a suite of new iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence features.
The iPhone 17 display has been upgraded to a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR panel that matches the size of the Pro model. It features ProMotion with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, thinner borders, a contoured edge design, and Always-On capability that can drop to 1Hz for efficiency. Peak outdoor brightness reaches 3000 nits — the highest ever on iPhone — with 2x better outdoor contrast. Ceramic Shield 2, Apple's toughest smartphone front cover, adds new anti-reflection coating for reduced glare.
The camera system sees a major overhaul. For the first time, all rear cameras are 48MP, including a Fusion Main camera with integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto, and a new Fusion Ultra Wide camera with up to 4x the resolution of the previous generation for expansive wide-angle and detailed macro shots. Photographic Styles now understand skin tones better, and iOS 26 introduces a new "Bright" style that brightens skin and adds vibrance. Video recording supports 4K60 Dolby Vision with Cinematic and Action modes, captured with Spatial Audio. Audio Mix lets users boost voices and reduce noise after capture, wind noise reduction minimizes interference, and iPhone 17 can also record spatial photos and videos for Apple Vision Pro.
The all-new Center Stage front camera introduces the first square sensor on iPhone, offering an 18MP resolution, a wider field of view, and the ability to take portrait or landscape selfies while holding the phone vertically. AI expands the frame for group shots and automatically rotates between portrait and landscape to include everyone. The camera records ultra-stabilized 4K HDR video, supports Dual Capture with front and rear cameras simultaneously, and keeps callers framed and stable during FaceTime and third-party video calls.
Powering everything is the A19 chip, built on third-generation 3nm technology. Its 6-core CPU is 1.5x faster and its 5-core GPU is over 2x faster than the A15 in iPhone 13, with Neural Accelerators integrated into every GPU core to handle on-device generative AI. A new display engine, ISP, and Apple Neural Engine enable Apple Intelligence features and advanced Photographic Styles. Combined with iOS 26 power management, iPhone 17 delivers all-day battery life, up to 30 hours of video playback — eight more than iPhone 16 — and supports Adaptive Power Mode to intelligently conserve energy. With Apple's new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, iPhone 17 can charge to 50% in 20 minutes.
Connectivity is also upgraded with the N1 wireless chip, supporting Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, while improving AirDrop and Personal Hotspot reliability. eSIM expands further, with an eSIM-only iPhone 17 offered in countries including the U.S., Canada, Japan, and the UAE. Apple says eSIM is more secure than physical SIMs and makes international travel simpler with support from 500+ carriers.
iPhone 17 ships with iOS 26, which introduces Apple Intelligence across system apps. Live Translation can translate text and audio in real time across Messages, FaceTime, and Phone. Visual intelligence lets users take action on anything visible on screen, and a new "Liquid Glass" design refreshes the look of apps and system UI. iOS 26 also brings new screening tools for calls and messages, updates to Apple Music, Maps, Wallet, CarPlay, and the launch of a new Apple Games app as a single hub for gaming.
Apple also announced a range of new accessories: a Clear Case with MagSafe, a Silicone Case in five colors, and a Crossbody Strap available in 10 colors. A new FineWoven Wallet with MagSafe, Qi2-certified 25W MagSafe chargers, and the 40W Dynamic Power Adapter were also introduced.
Apple highlighted the device's environmental credentials, noting that iPhone 17 is made with 30% recycled content, including 85% recycled aluminum in the enclosure and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery. Manufacturing uses 35% renewable electricity across the supply chain, and packaging is entirely fiber-based.
Pricing for iPhone 17 starts at $799, with 256GB and 512GB storage options available in black, lavender, mist blue, sage, and white. Pre-orders open Friday, September 12, with availability beginning Friday, September 19 in more than 63 countries, and additional markets on September 26. Apple is also extending free satellite feature access by one year for iPhone 14 and 15 users. Customers can trade in an eligible device for up to $700 in Apple credit or $1,100 through select carrier deals, and financing and AppleCare+ options are available. Buyers also get three free months of Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, Apple Music, Apple News+, and Apple TV+.
