Samsung Display's CEO has confirmed the company is preparing to mass-produce OLED panels for a foldable phone from a "North American client," with a launch expected next year — comments that all but confirm the company's role as a key supplier for Apple's first foldable iPhone.
Speaking to reporters at a "Display Day" event in Seoul, company president Lee Chung said that while he could not name the client, preparations are "going well." This follows earlier reports that Samsung Display would be the exclusive supplier for the foldable iPhone's display. The device is widely expected to launch in the second half of 2026, a timeline that aligns with a previously leaked product roadmap.
Lee also noted that Samsung's new Gen 8.6 OLED production line, designed for IT devices like tablets and laptops, is on track to begin operations in the third quarter of 2026. This could be relevant for future MacBooks or a larger foldable iPad, though that project is reportedly on hold for now.
The CEO also touched on the recent U.S. International Trade Commission ruling that found competitor BOE had infringed on its trade secrets. The preliminary decision could lead to an import ban on certain iPhones that use BOE's panels.
