Apple's upcoming low-cost MacBook could arrive in a vibrant range of colors, finishes that were originally planned for the M2 MacBook Air.
According to a recent post on Weibo from leaker Instant Digital, Apple had intended to use a light, fresh color scheme during development of the redesigned 2022 MacBook Air. The idea ultimately did not move forward, with the model launching in more traditional finishes such as Silver, Starlight, Space Gray, and Midnight. The same colorful aesthetic now appears to be resurfacing for Apple's next entry-level laptop.
The leak aligns with recent reports about Apple's hardware roadmap. We've been tracking details on a budget-friendly MacBook aimed at education and enterprise customers as Apple looks to compete more directly with Chromebooks. Prototypes for the device have reportedly been tested in shades of light yellow, light green, blue, pink, and purple. The artwork for Apple's recently announced March 4 media event prominently features yellow, green, and blue, potentially pointing to those finishes for the final release.
Beyond the exterior design, the new laptop is expected to mark a notable shift in Mac architecture. Rather than using an M-series processor, the machine is said to feature an iPhone-class A-series chip, a move aimed at keeping the price well under $1,000. It is also expected to feature an aluminum chassis built using a new manufacturing process and a display measuring slightly under 13 inches.
