Apple took over the Los Angeles skyline on Friday night to celebrate the upcoming second season of "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" with a massive drone performance. The event set a Guinness World Record for the tallest aerial depiction of a fictional character, filling the air above the Hollywood Forever Cemetery with towering representations of Godzilla, Kong, and the newly introduced Titan X.
The 12-minute spectacle utilized 3,000 drones to construct three-dimensional figures reaching nearly 500 feet into the sky. Spanning an area of roughly 1,000 by 1,000 feet, the display was visible from up to three miles away in any direction. Rather than projecting flat images, the production mapped the Titans against the physical landscape of the city. Pyrotechnic-equipped drones were also integrated into the sequence to simulate visual effects like Godzilla's atomic breath, all synchronized to a custom score by series composer Leopold Ross.
Created in collaboration with the creative agency Heads in the Sky, the activation drew onlookers across the city. Series stars Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anders Holm, Mari Yamamoto, and Joe Tippett were on hand to watch the aerial battle, capping off a week of promotions that included a red carpet premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre.
The stunt arrives just days before the 10-episode second season premieres globally on February 27. The new season picks up with the fate of the secretive Monarch organization hanging in the balance, bringing characters to Kong's Skull Island and introducing the bioluminescent Titan X. The series is a major piece of Apple's expanding Monsterverse library, which will also include a recently ordered prequel spinoff focusing on a young Colonel Lee Shaw.
Apple's massive drone show stands as one of its most ambitious promotional efforts so far, putting a major spotlight on Monarch ahead of its premiere and reinforcing its commitment to the Monsterverse.
