MacBook Pro M5 Pro/Max Reviews: Massive Performance Gains, Same Familiar Design [Video]

Apple's new MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max are getting their first wave of reviews following the lifting of Apple's review embargo. Early impressions suggest Apple has delivered another substantial performance boost, especially in graphics, while keeping the same familiar MacBook Pro design.

Apple introduced the new MacBook Pro earlier this month, touting a new Fusion Architecture, an 18-core CPU, a next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators, and up to 4x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to the previous generation. If you're considering a purchase, you can also track current pricing using the iClarified Mac price tracker.

Below is a roundup of early reviews from major publications. The new models are available for pre-order here:
14-inch: MacBook Pro 14-inch
16-inch: MacBook Pro 16-inch

Tom's Guide says the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro delivers major gains in both speed and endurance:
"The MacBook Pro 16-inch M5 Pro delivers incredible M5 Pro performance and well beyond all-day battery life, along with a stunning 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, generous port selection, and sleek design."

The publication notes that the jump over the previous generation is not revolutionary, but still meaningful.

"Don't expect a major upgrade from the M4 Pro model with this laptop. Generally, we see a 15 to 20% boost in performance and nearly 30 minutes longer battery life."

Macworld says the M5 Max version remains Apple's top laptop for buyers who want the best possible performance.

"If you want Apple's best laptop and money is no object, it's the M5 Max MacBook Pro. It's fast, it has a great-looking display, and it features a distinguished design."

Macworld also points to storage performance as one of the biggest improvements.

"The significantly increased SSD speed means certain workflows will see much faster data access and file transfers, providing noticeable benefits—even if you already have an M4 Max."

Gizmodo focuses on just how much performance Apple has packed into the latest MacBook Pro.

"The M5 Max MacBook Pro is definitely the most powerful 14-inch laptop I have ever used."

At the same time, the site argues that the hardware design is overdue for a more substantial refresh.

"The M5 Max MacBook Pro is really held back by an aging shell."

Six Colors says the new MacBook Pro is still the same laptop Apple has been refining for several years, just with faster internals.

"It's the familiar, definitive MacBook Pro that was introduced with the M1 Pro and Max in 2021 and updated with new processors for the M2, M3, and M4 generations."

The publication says Apple's silicon progress continues to stand out.

"The pace of Apple silicon progress is breathtaking."

CNET says the biggest reason to choose between M5 Pro and M5 Max comes down to graphics needs, not CPU performance.

"It'll all come down to your performance needs."

CNET also says the new machines remain among the best options available for creative professionals.

"I'm confident enough to state that these are still some of the best laptops around."

Overall, the first reviews suggest Apple's new MacBook Pro lineup is another strong step forward for power users. The biggest gains appear to come from graphics performance, AI-related workloads, and SSD speed, while the familiar design, excellent display, and broad port selection remain intact.
