David Pogue's comprehensive new history book, Apple: The First 50 Years, is now available to purchase on Amazon.
Published by Simon & Schuster, the 608-page hardcover chronicles the tech company's entire lifecycle from its founding on April 1, 1976, through its transformation into one of the world's most valuable corporations. Pogue, a former New York Times tech columnist, draws on fresh interviews with over 150 key figures to outline the narrative. Interviewees include Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, former CEO John Sculley, former design chief Jony Ive, and numerous current engineers and executives.
The release aims to correct the historical record and dispel several long-held myths surrounding the hardware maker. Pogue's research notes that Apple did not actually start in a garage, Steve Jobs was not the company's first CEO, and John Sculley did not fire Jobs. It also details how the Newton ultimately helped save the company and clarifies that the tablet concept predated the phone. The book arrives just as Apple publicly marks the milestone, which recently included an open letter from Tim Cook celebrating the company's 50th anniversary.
Pogue is a seven-time Emmy winner known for his ongoing work on CBS Sunday Morning. That network recently aired an extended segment where Cook reflected on Apple's early struggles and the enduring vision of Steve Jobs. Throughout the newly released hardcover edition, Pogue explores the backstage dynamics behind massive successes like the iPod and iPhone, while also examining instructive missteps like the Lisa and MobileMe.
