Apple has rolled out a pair of security updates for older iPhones and iPads, releasing iOS 16.7.15 and iOS 15.8.7 to patch vulnerabilities on devices that do not support the company's latest operating systems.
The iOS 16.7.15 and iPadOS 16.7.15 updates carry build number 20H380. They are available for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, the fifth-generation iPad, and the original 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models. The update follows Apple's release of iOS 16.7.14, which addressed a critical emergency calling issue in certain regions.
For even older hardware, Apple issued iOS 15.8.7 and iPadOS 15.8.7 under build number 19H411. This release covers the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, first-generation iPhone SE, seventh-generation iPod touch, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 4.
Apple's release notes do not outline the specific vulnerabilities addressed in these builds, stating only that the software provides important security fixes and is recommended for users. Apple routinely ships these maintenance updates to protect legacy hardware from security threats and keep older devices supported.
Users can install the software over the air by navigating to Settings, tapping General, and selecting Software Update. For those who prefer a manual installation, you can also find the correct firmware file for your device using the iClarified IPSW Wizard.
