Apple Officially Releases iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 [Download]

Apple has officially released iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, making the major software updates available for compatible iPhone and iPad models. The release follows more than three months of beta testing after the software was previewed at WWDC26 in June.



The updates introduce the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, Apple's rebuilt assistant with personal context, onscreen awareness, broader world knowledge, and additional actions across apps. Siri can find information in messages, emails, and photos; answer questions about onscreen content; and search the web for current information. A new Siri mode in the iPhone Camera app can answer questions and take actions based on what the camera sees, while Visual Intelligence is integrated into the screenshot experience on iPad.





Write with Siri can generate a draft from a description or revise existing text, and a dedicated Siri app privately syncs conversation history through iCloud. Siri AI is rolling out in beta in English, with support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish scheduled for October.


Apple Intelligence also adds new features throughout the system. Photos gains Spatial Reframing, Extend, and an upgraded Clean Up tool. Image Playground can generate photorealistic images and adds metadata to help identify AI-generated or edited content, with support for the SynthID standard coming later. Safari can organize tabs by topic, monitor webpages for changes such as restocks or price drops, and create custom extensions from a description. Call Context can surface information such as a confirmation code or reservation number while calling a business.



Parental controls receive a substantial update with a simpler setup process for child accounts, website permission requests through Ask to Browse, and redesigned Screen Time controls. Parents can set daily time allowances across app categories and create schedules for access at different points in the day. Communication Safety can now intervene when shared images or videos contain gore or violent content, in addition to nudity.

Performance and System Improvements

Apple says apps can launch up to 30 percent faster on iPhone and iPad, recently captured photos can load up to 70 percent faster, and AirDrop transfers can be up to 80 percent faster. On iPad, browsing files and transferring them to an external USB drive is now up to five times faster, with additional improvements to closing, switching, and dragging windows while multitasking.


Transitions between cellular and Wi-Fi networks are also more seamless. In Messages, sending a large photo or video over a slow connection no longer prevents later text messages from going through while the attachment is being delivered.



Search across Spotlight, Photos, and Mail is more stable and comprehensive, while a new ranking system surfaces more relevant results in Mail's Top Hits. Liquid Glass receives additional refinements, including a Settings slider that adjusts its appearance from ultraclear to fully tinted and sharper, more defined app icons.

iCloud Shared Albums now support full-resolution photos and videos and make it easier for Android and Windows users to join and contribute. The Health app adds perimenopause and menopause support to Cycle Tracking, including notifications about cycle deviations. Other additions include custom EQ for AirPods, expanded GymKit support that lets AirPods Pro 3 users sync heart-rate data through iPhone, and an enhanced Apple Maps Flyover experience that combines aerial imagery with AI.

Availability

Siri AI requires a supported Apple Intelligence device. On iPhone, that includes iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone Air, and iPhone Duo. On iPad, support requires an M1 chip or later, or iPad mini with A17 Pro.

Siri AI is not initially available on iPhone or iPad in the European Union, while Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features remain unavailable in China as Apple works through regulatory requirements. Siri AI is also unavailable to users under 13.

Certain Apple Intelligence features that use server-side models are subject to daily usage limits that can vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, and other factors. Apple says expanded access to those features will be available for a fee in the future.
