iPhone 18 Pro vs. iPhone 18 Pro Max: What Does the Extra $100 Buy?

The iPhone 18 Pro Max costs $100 more than the iPhone 18 Pro at their U.S. starting prices. That buys a larger screen and longer rated battery life in a noticeably bigger phone. The cameras, A20 Pro chip, and storage choices are the same.

For most buyers, the decision is less about which iPhone is more capable than which size they'd rather carry. Here's where the Pro Max earns its premium, and where the smaller Pro gives you the same experience.

A Bigger Screen, and 38 Grams More to Carry

The iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch display; the Pro Max stretches that to 6.9 inches. The larger canvas gives photos, videos, maps, and games more room, but the Pro Max is also 13.4mm taller and 6.1mm wider. At 249 grams, it weighs 38 grams more than the 211-gram Pro before you add a case.

If you use your phone one-handed, keep it in a smaller pocket, or already find large phones awkward, the Pro is the easier size to live with. The Max makes more sense if your phone is where you do most of your reading or watching and you welcome the extra screen space.

Display quality is otherwise closely matched. Both are OLED panels with 460 pixels per inch, ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz, an always-on display, and up to 3000 nits of outdoor brightness. Both also have the smaller Dynamic Island introduced with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. The Max has more pixels to fill its larger panel, not a sharper pixel density.

Battery Life Is the Max's Strongest Argument

Apple rates the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max for up to 45 hours of video playback, compared with 36 hours for the Pro. Streamed-video ratings are 40 and 33 hours, respectively. Apple's separate mixed-use test gives the Max up to 30 hours and the Pro up to 24 hours.

Those are different ways of measuring battery life: the mixed-use figure includes a range of apps and idle time, while the video figures measure playback. They aren't promises about how long either phone will last through your particular day, but all three ratings favor the Max.

These figures apply to the eSIM-only versions sold in the U.S. and Canada. Apple says versions with a physical SIM tray have two fewer hours of rated video playback. If you buy abroad, check the regional model's specifications.

Charging is shared. Both phones can reach up to 50% in around 15 minutes using a 60W-capable or higher USB PD 3.1 adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS) and a 60W-capable USB-C cable. Apple's MagSafe claim is up to 50% in 30 minutes with a compatible charger and a 35W-or-higher adapter. Power adapters and MagSafe Chargers are sold separately; a USB-C Charge Cable comes in the box.

The Same Cameras in Both Sizes

Both phones get the 48MP Main camera with four aperture settings: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4.0. Opening the aperture lets in more light; narrowing it brings more of a scene into focus. Apple's Camera app can make that adjustment automatically, or you can choose an aperture with the new Pro controls.

They also share a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, a 48MP telephoto camera with a 4x lens, and a 12MP optical-quality 8x crop from that telephoto sensor. Both offer the Main camera's 12MP optical-quality 2x option and the same 18MP Center Stage front camera.

Video features match, too, including 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps on the Main camera, rear-camera Cinematic mode at up to 4K/60 fps, and ProRes recording at up to 4K/120 fps with external storage. ProRes RAW requires compatible apps. Moving to the Max gives you a larger viewfinder, but the capture features are available on either size.

Both also support Apple Reference Image, an opt-in mode that uses signed sensor data to create an unalterable reference alongside your photo. Reference capture won't be available in the EU at launch, and the feature won't be available in China at launch.

$100 Separates the Starting Models

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299 in the U.S., both with 256GB of storage. Both can also be configured with 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB, and both come in black, silver, glacier, and burgundy.

Each has A20 Pro with a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU, and dual 16-core Neural Engine. Both support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and USB 3 transfers up to 10Gb/s with a suitable cable. There isn't a higher chip tier reserved for the larger phone.


Black, silver, glacier, and burgundy are available in both sizes.

Which Should You Buy?

Choose iPhone 18 Pro if you want the new cameras and performance in the smaller, lighter body. It gives you the same core hardware while saving $100 at the starting configuration.

Choose iPhone 18 Pro Max if a bigger display and longer battery life matter more than pocketability. For someone already comfortable with a Max-size phone, those are useful everyday benefits for the extra money.
