iPhone Duo vs. iPhone 18 Pro Max: What Does the Extra $700 Buy?

Posted 58 minutes ago by
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, making Apple's first foldable $700 more expensive than the $1,299 iPhone 18 Pro Max. The extra money buys a 7.6-inch inner display and a new way to work across apps.

Both use A20 Pro, but the Pro Max has the more versatile rear camera system and longer rated battery life. Choosing between them comes down to whether a wider, folding workspace is worth the price and tradeoffs.

The Extra $700 Buys a Different Workspace

The defining feature of iPhone Duo is its 7.6-inch inner display. A separate 5.4-inch outer screen handles tasks without unfolding the phone. Both support ProMotion at up to 120Hz, an always-on display, and up to 3000 nits of outdoor brightness.

Duo can show two apps side by side on its inner screen, open separate windows from the same app, and save app pairs for later. You could keep a reference page beside a conversation or work between a document and another app without constantly switching views.

The wider inner screen gives Duo room for side-by-side work, while the 6.9-inch Pro Max uses a conventional tall phone display. If you regularly switch between apps, that change in layout could be more useful than the extra screen size alone.

Support for Apple Pencil (USB-C) is due later this year, after Duo's launch.

A Shorter, Wider Phone When Folded

Duo measures 5.2mm thick when open and 11.3mm when closed. Folded, it is shorter and wider than the Pro Max: 117.8mm tall by 84.1mm wide, versus 163.4mm tall by 78mm wide for the conventional phone. Its 254-gram weight is just five grams above the Pro Max's 249 grams.

The change in shape is likely to be more noticeable in a pocket than the extra five grams. It's worth trying Duo in person to see how its wider body feels in your hand.

Unlocking changes as well. Duo uses Touch ID in its side button; Pro Max uses Face ID. Both have an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

Pro Max Keeps the Camera Advantage

The iPhone 18 Pro Max camera system includes a variable-aperture 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra wide, and a 48MP telephoto. It offers 4x telephoto framing and an 8x optical-quality crop.

Duo has 48MP main and ultra wide cameras, but no dedicated telephoto camera. Its main camera has a fixed f/1.6 aperture and supplies a 2x optical-quality option. Someone who frequently photographs distant subjects has a clear hardware reason to choose Pro Max.

Duo has a useful trick for selfies: its outer screen lets you see the framing while using the rear cameras.

Battery Life Depends on Which Duo Screen You Use

Apple lists up to 44 hours of video playback on Duo's outer display, but up to 31 hours on the inner display. Pro Max is rated for up to 45 hours.

Apple's separate typical-use ratings are up to 24 hours for Duo, based on equal use of its two displays, and up to 30 hours for Pro Max. Pro Max leads in both of Apple's tests, although everyday results will vary with use.

Both support MagSafe charging at up to 25W. With the required compatible wired charging equipment, Pro Max reaches 50 percent in about 15 minutes, compared with about 20 minutes for Duo.

Which Should You Buy?

Choose iPhone Duo if side-by-side apps and the larger inner canvas would change how you use your phone every day. Both phones start with 256GB of storage and use the A20 Pro chip; Duo's larger workspace is the main reason to spend more.

Choose iPhone 18 Pro Max if cameras, battery life, Face ID, or a more familiar pocketable shape matter more. It costs less while retaining hardware advantages that the foldable does not match.

There is a substantial wait between the two launches. Pro Max pre-orders begin September 12, with availability September 18. Duo pre-orders begin October 16, and it arrives October 23 with iOS 27.1. If you need a phone this month, Duo is not an immediate alternative.
