iFixit Investigates iPhone Duo Screen Failures, Points to Possible Hinge Issue [Video]

iFixit is investigating whether the iPhone Duo's hinge geometry could help explain reports of inner-screen failures. Its new teardown identifies a possible stress hotspot near the center support, but stops short of confirming what is causing the damage.

Some owners have reported hearing a pop or crunch while opening or closing the phone, followed by bright lines across the display. Comparing those reports with a hinge model built from teardown footage, patents, and CT scans, the team found that damage clusters just below the gap where a flex cable crosses between the two halves.

One hypothesis is that a center support bar is not dropping far enough as the phone closes, allowing the curved display to press against it. Several edges meet nearby, which could concentrate stress. Pressure, trapped particles, repeated bending, and manufacturing defects are also possible explanations; a small fault in the display's electrical connections can disrupt an entire row or column of pixels without the whole visible band being physically cracked.

A separate fluorescent-powder challenge found that most dust stopped at the adhesive barriers protecting the electronics. Some still reached the hinge and made it crunch, although less visible powder collected there than in earlier Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold tests. This was not a standardized IP certification test.

Despite those vulnerabilities, iFixit awarded the Duo a provisional 5 out of 10 for repairability, its highest score for a foldable smartphone so far. The outer display could be removed intact, and both batteries released cleanly with electricity, as we saw in the first iPhone Duo teardowns.

The inner screen and hinge account for the biggest deductions. Reaching them involves substantial disassembly and delicate adhesive work, while the teardown cites a $999 out-of-coverage inner-display service charge. The score remains provisional until replacement parts become available.

The display examination also helps explain why the crease is difficult to see. Microscopic bumps on the removable nano-texture cover scatter reflections, disguising the dip at the fold. Removing that cover makes the crease more apparent and leaves a surface that scratches more easily; Apple's replacement procedure requires specialized fixtures and precise alignment.

Beneath the cover, oval subpixels point in different directions. The team links that arrangement to an Apple patent describing variations in subpixel shapes and orientations to reduce diffraction artifacts, suggesting another possible way the display makes reflected patterns less conspicuous.
