Porsche is bringing back an iconic Apple Computer spectrum livery for a one-time appearance to mark two major milestones for both companies. At the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship round at Laguna Seca on May 3, the Porsche Penske Motorsport works team will field two Porsche 963 race cars wrapped in the rainbow-striped design.
The special wrap is based on the Porsche 935 K3 that competed during the 1980 season, including an appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Apple's signature spectrum branding. Porsche says the one-time design celebrates 75 years of Porsche Motorsport and 50 years since the founding of Apple.
"We've enjoyed a longstanding relationship with Porsche, going back to 1980 when a Porsche race car first carried the Apple logo," said Oliver Schusser, Apple's vice president of Apple Music, Sports and Beats. "That moment marked the beginning of a shared passion for innovation and creativity that continues to define our collaboration today."
The race takes place at Laguna Seca in northern California, roughly 80 miles south of Apple Park, adding a geographic link between the two brands for the event.
The two-hour and 40-minute race will feature the No. 6 Porsche 963 driven by Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor, while Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr will pilot the No. 7 car. Porsche enters the weekend leading both the driver and manufacturer standings following wins at Daytona and Sebring.
