Apple's upcoming AirPods with built-in cameras are now in advanced testing, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
Prototypes for the new earbuds are currently undergoing design validation testing, marking the last major step before production validation and early mass manufacturing. The product is expected to resemble the AirPods Pro 3, though the stems have reportedly been extended to fit low-resolution cameras in both earbuds.
The cameras are not intended for traditional photography. Instead, they are designed to feed visual information into Siri so the assistant can better understand a user's surroundings. Wearers will reportedly be able to ask questions about objects directly in front of them, similar to the existing Visual Intelligence features on the iPhone. Apple is also testing ways to use the visual input for contextual reminders and more detailed turn-by-turn directions that reference nearby landmarks. To ease privacy concerns, the earbuds include a small LED indicator that lights up whenever visual data is being sent to the cloud.
The hardware was originally expected to launch earlier this year but was delayed alongside a revamped version of Siri. The assistant is now said to be back on track for September after Apple upgraded its underlying models using Google Gemini technology. Apple is also working on a dedicated Siri camera mode in iOS 27 that would push visual AI features more prominently throughout the operating system.
The camera-equipped AirPods are part of Apple's broader effort to compete with companies like OpenAI and Meta in the emerging AI hardware market. The earbuds have reportedly been in development for around four years. Apple is also developing smart glasses and a camera-equipped wearable pendant, though those projects are believed to be further behind. The company had also explored adding cameras to the Apple Watch before canceling the effort last year.
Unlike the Vision Pro, neither the new AirPods nor the upcoming smart glasses are expected to support hand-gesture controls. The projects fall under a larger product roadmap overseen by incoming CEO John Ternus, who takes over on September 1. Ternus is reportedly overseeing around 10 major new products, including a touchscreen MacBook, a foldable iPhone, and several AI-focused smart home devices.
Even with the hardware nearing completion, the launch is still not locked in. Concerns about the quality of the visual AI features could still delay the product if Apple executives are not satisfied with the experience. At the same time, Apple's operations teams are dealing with industrywide memory chip shortages while trying to secure enough components to support expected demand for the earbuds.
