Perplexity is opening up its local AI orchestration tool to a wider audience, releasing a new macOS application that brings its autonomous Personal Computer feature to all Mac users.
The platform allows AI agents to interact directly with local files, native Mac applications, the web, and Perplexity's own secure cloud infrastructure. By moving the company's agentic system onto Apple hardware, the software is designed to handle long-running, multi-step tasks across a user's desktop workflow while still surfacing approvals when needed.
The tool initially launched in April as a limited rollout restricted to Max tier subscribers and waitlisted users. Now, anyone can download the redesigned macOS app to handle everyday queries, dictation, and file attachments. Users on Pro and Max plans can also apply subscription credits toward more advanced autonomous workflows.
Perplexity continues to position the Mac mini as the ideal host for the software. By keeping a desktop running continuously, users can initiate a task from an iPhone and have work completed locally on their Mac by the time they return. The company says this setup enables a quieter, more asynchronous style of computing where background tasks continue running until human input is required.
The company says the software is built for tasks that span multiple sources. A user could ask the AI to cross-reference a spreadsheet in the Downloads folder against several open web tabs, compare documents stored locally, or assemble a report using notes scattered across different native applications. When paired with the company's Comet browser, the system can also operate web-based tools that lack direct API connectors.
The new Perplexity macOS application is available to download directly from the company's website and is not currently listed on the App Store. Perplexity says the previous version of its Mac app will be deprecated in the coming weeks.
