Perplexity is moving beyond the browser and into the Mac file system with the launch of Personal Computer, a native expansion that lets AI orchestrate workflows directly on your machine. The update allows the platform to work across local documents, native applications, and the web to complete complex tasks that usually require a user to manually click and switch between different apps.
The timing of this release is notable for Apple users who have been increasingly repurposing hardware for local AI tasks. We recently saw inventory for the Mac mini and Mac Studio tighten as demand rises for dedicated machines. Perplexity highlights the Mac mini as an ideal host for Personal Computer, noting that because it is often left on 24/7, the system can stay available for continuous workflows or provide secure local access to files even when a user is managing tasks from a phone on the go.
Instead of just answering questions in a chat box, the system acts as an orchestrator. Users can trigger the assistant by pressing both Command keys at the same time while using native apps like Notes. From there, you can ask Personal Computer to read a to-do list and execute the items. The system breaks tasks into steps and works across iMessage, email, and other connected apps to get the work done. It can also handle system-level chores, such as taking a cluttered Downloads folder and automatically sorting it into project folders with sensible naming conventions.
This move toward more agent-driven computing places Perplexity alongside other major players expanding AI capabilities on the Mac. The release arrives shortly after Apple introduced autonomous AI agents in Xcode 26.3 and Anthropic rolled out computer control for Claude. While those tools are largely aimed at developers, Perplexity is positioning its version for everyday productivity and information management.
To handle the privacy risks of an AI digging through local data, the app uses a secure sandbox for any file creation. Every action the system takes is designed to be auditable and reversible so the user stays in the loop. This focus on control is particularly relevant as Apple prepares its own software shift. Reports indicate that Apple will open Siri to third-party assistants like Gemini and Claude in iOS 27. Perplexity is essentially staking its claim on the Mac desktop ahead of potential system-level integration from Apple.
The launch follows a busy period for the company, which recently introduced Perplexity Health and the Comet AI browser for iPhone. Personal Computer for Mac is rolling out today to Perplexity Max subscribers. The company says it will prioritize users on its existing waitlist as it scales the rollout to a broader audience over the coming weeks.
