Apple is planning a major redesign of the Camera app in iOS 27, adding a fully customizable interface geared toward both professional users and casual photographers, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
Users will gain the ability to choose which controls appear in the Camera app and where they are positioned. Options for the flash, exposure, timer, and resolution will become modular widgets running along the top of the interface. While the app will continue to load a familiar default layout, users can activate an advanced array or build a personalized setup.
Each capture mode will feature a distinct set of widgets accessible from a transparent tray sliding up from the bottom of the screen. The advanced tray for Photo mode includes specific depth-of-field and exposure controls categorized into basic, manual, and settings options. Users will also be able to swap in controls for the timer and photo styles.
Apple is moving the toggle to view all available controls from the top-right corner to the right side of the shutter button. The updated Camera app also adds native grid and level tools.
Additionally, Apple is introducing a dedicated Siri mode in the Camera app to provide quick access to Visual Intelligence features for identifying objects or translating text.
Several native applications are also getting updates in iOS 27. Safari is gaining a redesigned start page with four tabs across the top for quickly switching between favorites, bookmarks, the reading list, and browsing history. The Weather app is adding a new conditions panel directly on the main city page, making it easier to check wind and rain data without opening additional screens.
Image Playground is receiving a visual refresh as well. Previously created images on the main page now appear with more rounded edges, and the standard new image button has been replaced by a simpler plus icon. Generated images will now appear inside a large rounded square with a cleaner layout and a new option that lets users quickly describe edits to a recently created image. Bloomberg also says Apple has been testing upgraded Image Playground models designed to generate more lifelike images.
Across the operating system, Apple is consolidating tab bars. The search tab will be merged with the primary navigation bar in apps like Podcasts, TV, Music, Health, and News. An updated keyboard animation will slide keys up from the bottom of the screen upon activation. For users who frequently reorganize their app layouts, iOS 27 introduces undo and redo controls for home screen customization.
On the desktop side, Apple plans to make design changes across the upcoming macOS 27 to address readability complaints tied to shadows and transparencies introduced with the Liquid Glass design language last year.
