Users in the European Union will soon be able to choose third-party casting protocols instead of AirPlay as the default streaming option on iPhone. The change is coming as part of Apple's ongoing compliance efforts under the European Union's Digital Markets Act.
According to Mark Gurman, Apple is building support for AirPlay alternatives directly into iOS 27. The update will allow services like Google Cast to be set as the default method for streaming video, photos, and audio from an Apple device to compatible TVs and speakers.
AirPlay is currently deeply integrated throughout iOS and acts as the system's native casting technology. Under the new system, users in the EU will reportedly be able to select a third-party protocol to handle media streaming by default.
The move builds on a growing list of changes Apple has made in Europe to comply with the DMA. The company has already introduced support for third-party app marketplaces, sideloading, and alternative browser options in the region. Apple has also publicly pushed back against parts of the EU's regulatory process, previously accusing regulators of political delay tactics.
The new casting options are expected to remain limited to EU users. The update also arrives as European broadcasters continue pushing to expand DMA regulation to Apple TV and Siri.
