The iPhone 4 is officially launching in India on May 27th, according to a press release from Aircel.
BGR notes that the phone will be reverse subsidized.
What really interests us is the fact that the phone is going to be reverse subsidised, once again just as we had predicted. The release states that "Following an upfront payment of Rs. 34,500 for the 16GB model and Rs. 40,900 for the 32GB model, customers will have the opportunity to recover 100 percent of their upfront iPhone cost in monthly credits on their service plan over a period of 24 months."

gold opportunity for eBay sellers to flood India with iphone 4 software-unlocked for cheaper price... i bet they won't think twice to pay $ 550 for 16gb.
Well as far as I'm aware, most of Europe and Asia are typically on pre-paid plans. Because of this you usually have to buy any phone for the full amount. When I was stationed in Italy from 03-07, I remember paying $550 for a Razr phone in 2004. I recall a Nokia that was worth 1000 Euro. The cheapest phone we had on base alone was $150 though in the city you could buy them for under 100 Euro... Though they were POS
The idea behind this launch is to have even better tech support. Now that our Indian friends will be using the iPhone 4, they will have a better understanding of how to deal with your problems.
Nice comment, Jen. :)
And Mr. Fake Steve, we don't even need an iPhone4 to understand it. One can follow all this kind of websites to know about it all. And above all not all Indians work in call center.
This post caught my attention because I paid somewhere near that price for my 16g 3GS middle of last year, which was the rrp, so (assuming you're located in US/Can?) I jumped on that regions Apple site and almost died when I seen the rrp! I'm not savvy on how international telco's are set up but why do we pay so much here in AUS when the same technology is available internationally at such a cheaper price????
Is it possible to use a US iPhone with Oz telco's?
I haven't upgraded because of the cost and it's ridiculous that the cost is so high for us when the technology upgrades so fast, it's too expensive to keep up :S
Living in India, I think I can confidently say that barely anybody would pay890$ for any phone. Most people already have the latest iPhones fron grey markets
