Google Fiber has gone live at Stanford University's Residential Subdivision, a group of approximately 850 faculty- and staff-owned homes on campus.
Through this trial, we plan to offer Internet speeds up to 1 gigabit per second-more than 100 times faster than what most people have access to today. We plan to start breaking ground in early 2011.
Google says they plan "to take what we learn from this small deployment to help scale our project more effectively and efficiently to much larger communities."
Seriously? Damn I have 100 MB/sec down/up for just under $14 (USD) and on bad days I have about 90 MB/sec down and 80 up.. 100 is almost standard over here (Sweden) and some are getting 1 GB now.. Insane that the US doesn't have higher speed than that.. No offense of course! You have less IP than we do covering a larger area but still.. :/
The USA broadband infrastructure for technology is very old (tired), with so much money put into it that it can't be abandon and start fresh. Our flaws, and research helps global ISP's but NOT ours.
That's pretty shitty man.. They should really fix that shit up for you. At least the people on Xbox LIVE so less games will lag ;). But seriously, I hope they get it sorted for you soon. A big and powerful country as the US should really be in the front when it comes to this..
That's awesome. Our local ISP has 170Mbps Fibre available, but it's really expensive (close to $300 Canadian I think), but the 70Mbps is more reasonable.
