Raspberry Pi, a credit-card sized computer with AirPlay capability that plugs into your television, is now available for purchase.
The Model A device features a 700 MHz ARM 11 processor, 256 MB of RAM, and HDMI, RCA Video, Audio, USB 2.0, and SD Card ports for just $25. The Model B device offers an Ethernet port and a bump to 256MB of RAM for just $35.
Currently, only the better Model B version is available to pre-order here or here.
Dom, a developer behind the project explains how AirPlay on the device works:
A small AirPlay service runs in the background and announces itself (using Bonjour) as an Apple TV2. This means when playing a video on an iOS device, an Airplay menu option becomes available to send the video to that device.
The R-Pi does a little communication with the iOS device and gets an http URL to play. This may point to the iOS device or the internet. The media player on R-Pi plays the video from that URL.

Unfortunately, they sold out in 4 hours. Be a month before more are available :(
This can run XBMC, though, so it's a freaking awesome little HTPC you could bolt to the back of your TV.

A bump from 256MB to 256MB isn't much of a bump ;P

Mirroring? - March 1, 2012 at 12:09am
I'd be 100% buying one if they enabled mirroring so I could use my iP4S and my slingbox to stream live TV from my house to another TV. Until then I think the functionality is a bit diminished.
