Discontinuing the 17" MacBook Pro seems like a mistake. 15" screens are small and Macs are used with a lot of programs that require screen real estate.

agreed; however, the new retina 15" can display 1920x1200 if needed. (same as the latest 17" mbp)
Yes, text and icons will be smaller, yet i'm guessing the new retina resolution ill make it more readible than we are expecting.

An i5 in a supposed "pro" laptop? Pathetic.
Apple is ignoring its pro user base.

The i5 is only on one model which is the lower end 13 inch. They do that for the people that just want an entry level MBP and don't need all the power. If you want a 13inch with and i7 get the next step up. Or you have the option of getting any one of the 15s which have quad i7s.

Some users argue that PCs offer better value and performance than the MacBook Pro.

Over priced junk? Give me a break. Look at the history and statistics and see which ones have lasted longer? A friend of mine and me personally have had the same MacBook Pros for a little over 3 years and have never had a major problem. And then there's another close friend who's had 3-4 cheaper higher-end PC laptops that failed in less than a year. Macs overpriced? I think it's the other way around. My friend switched to Macs and said he'll never go back to PCs, even though he still uses Windows 7 on his Mac occasionally because it runs better there than on PC hardware.

The 17-inch MacBook Pro was quite large and heavy to carry around.

I had a 17" Sony Vaio and that was terrible to lug around. Switched to MBP 15" and haven't looked back since.

go ahead, update your hard drive to SSD and enjoy your USB 2 and 72dpi display...
the rest of us will be enjoying the new technology.

oh and 1920x1200 display real estate? yeah, the new mbp can do that.. and the text will still be more readible than your 17" 1920x1200
