The Guardian is reporting that a recent court order is forcing Verizon to turn over records of phone calls originating in the United States over to the US National Security Agency (NSA).

According to alleged copy of the order, Verizon is required to turn over various information about phone calls such as IMEI numbers, time/duration, location data, and the phone numbers that were involved in the call. According to the report, this "telephony metadata" must be collected on all international calls originating within the US, and for all calls made within the US itself. The contents (recordings) of the phone calls are not required to be produced by Verizon.

The court order specifically prevents Verizon from disclosing to the public about the data is handing over to the government.

The order was signed by Judge Roger Vinson on April 25 and extends until July 19. The court order itself was classified, and was to be kept sealed until 2038, when it would become declassified.

Both Verizon and the NSA declined to comment.
