Pioneer has demoed CarPlay support on its NEX in-dash multimedia receivers to Melissa Riofrio from TechHive.

Announced last month, CarPlay compatibility will be available in early summer 2014 via a firmware update to Pioneers five 2014 NEX in-dash multimedia receivers.

The Pioneer demo also highlighted a few different things. The AVH-8000NEX system in our demo car has a capacitive touchscreen—still a rarity in aftermarket systems—so navigating the CarPlay icons for phone, map, music, and messaging functions was fast and responsive. The display showed a home button just like the one on your iPhone, to get back to the main screen.

Pricing and Availability
The AVIC-8000NEX ($1400 SRP), AVIC-7000NEX ($1200 SRP), AVIC-6000NEX ($900 SRP), AVIC-5000NEX ($750 SRP) and AVH-4000NEX ($700 SRP) are currently available at authorized Pioneer Car Electronics dealers nationwide. You can also find the receivers on Amazon: AVIC-8000NEX ($999), AVIC-7000NEX ($855), AVIC-6000NEX ($755), AVIC-5000NEX ($595).

Officially, the firmware update things brings CarPlay compatibility will be out this summer; however, VP of Marketing Ted Cardenas says it should be available in “a few weeks”.
