Tomorrow I officially start training for the Virgin Money London Marathon, using my Apple Watch. I ran the Kilimanjaro Half Marathon in 2:03. Now it’s time to ramp up from 13.1 to 26.2 miles.

When I first got the watch, I went with the white sport band. I also chose the Milanese loop, a couple of leather options, and a black sport band, so I can change it up depending on my mood or where I am. To begin with, I picked a simple face. Then while traveling, I added New York City time, so I’d know when to catch up with my kids before their bedtime. I also like the solar face, because it shows the position of the sun during the day. That way I can figure out the coolest times to run.

So far, it’s been a lot of fun. The watch is a great running tool. That first day in Tanzania, I needed to run 3 miles, but of course I didn’t know the route. (Back in New York, I have all my favorites memorized.) So I set a distance goal in the Workout app. At the halfway mark, the watch tapped me on the wrist and I knew when to turn around and come back. During the race, it was great to be able to see distance, pace, and elapsed time all at once.

I’m really looking forward to using the watch when I’m back in New York. I’m pretty busy when I’m at home, and it’ll help me manage my schedule. Not to mention, motivate me to pick up my speed. Right now my personal best for a marathon is 4:04. My goal for London is to break 4 hours.
