Tim Cook Blames 'Pause' in iPhone 7 Purchases on iPhone 8 Rumors

During the company's second quarter earnings call today, Apple CEO Tim Cook attributed a 'pause' in iPhone 7 purchases to the many leaks and rumors about its next generation iPhone. Unit sales of the iPhone 7 were down 1% year over year and could drop further in Q3.

Cook responded to a question regarding a research survey that found a nine year low in iPhone purchase intent and a declining retention rate.

"I only glanced at it and so I haven't had time to study it", said Cook. "But in general what we are seeing, we're seeing what we believe to be a pause in purchases on iPhone which we believe are due to the earlier and much more frequent reports about future iPhones. And so that part is clearly going on, and it could be what's behind the data. I don't know but we are seeing that, in full transparency."

It's not surprising the customers are holding off on upgrading their devices for the tenth anniversary iPhone. Rumors suggest it will be a massive update.

It will purportedly have a chassis made of reinforced glass with a stainless steel metal frame and an edge-to-edge display that has no bezels on the top and bottom. Additionally, the front camera, Touch ID, speaker, and other sensors will apparently be embedded into the display. Another report claims that the device would be a clear piece of glass with a next-generation OLED screen. The 5.8-inch screen is said to feature a main 5.15-inch display area with a reserved 'function area' below for virtual buttons. The device may use a stacked logic board design freeing up space for a larger battery pack. More recently, Apple is said to be equipping the phone with wireless charging, an iris scanner or face scanner, and a 3D camera.

Lately we've been hearing that the new iPhone's release may be delayed until October or November. Those rumors may be beneficial to Apple's sales in Q3. Are you holding off on an iPhone 7 purchase to jump straight to the iPhone 8? Let us know in the comments!
