All 'iPhone 8' Models to Have Black Front, Breakdown of 3D Sensor [KGI]

A new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo details the 3D sensor on the upcoming 'iPhone 8' and purports that all three colors (black, silver, gold) will have a black front.

The iPhone 8's notch is said to house a structured light transmitter, structured light receiver, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and front camera. Both the structured light transmitter and structured light receiver are new.

The structured light transmitter consists of six components from around ten different vendors, including: active alignment equipment, filter, wafer level optical, diffractive optical element, VCSEL, and a epitaxial wafer.

The structured light receiver module consists of four components from about six vendors: an IR lens, filter, CIS, and CMOS image sensor (1.4MP).

Kuo explains how the components work together:
● Structured light used to collect depth information, integrating with 2D image data from front camera to build the complete 3D image.
● Given the distance constraints of the structured light transmitter and receiver (we estimate 50-100cm), a proximity sensor (with ToF function) is needed to remind users to adjust their iPhone to the most optimal distance for 3D sensing.

Addressing the front color of the new iPhone models Kuo said, "We believe all OLED iPhone models (white, black, and gold casings) have front black-coating glass."

Apple is set to unveil the new 'iPhone 8' in a few days but new details continue to leak out. Just last night an iOS 11 GM firmware build leaked offering some more new information about Apple's 10th anniversary iPhone.

OMG I'm happy to read all fronts will be black, the white one looks like a fisher price toy lol. Eager to hear more in the upcoming days until September 12th arrives.

I thought the same. If they look like the ones in the picture, they look real cheap. I'm sure Apple will have an esthetically pleasing one.

Hope this is true also but the black front has always been a good look. The jet black and the matte black iphone 7 looks sooo good. People already said if they launch the iphone 7 red edition with a black front, it would have been a huge hit for apple. So maybe they learn there lesson with this news.
