USB-C is the connector used by every other manufacturer out there, lightning is a proprietary Apple connector. If they do change, it's only due to rumblings the EU is going to force it as a way to have a universal charging standard. All chargers would then work for any device...I suspect there have been a number of complaints either by consumers or competitors about Apple using their own. If you happen to lose your charger/cable, Apple's are always much more expensive and not as readily available.
