Apple Contemplates Low Cost Streaming Dongle [Report]

Apple has reportedly considered the launch of a new low cost streaming dongle to complement its upcoming video service, reports The Information. The dongle could help make the service more accessible to viewers.

The tech giant has had internal discussions about introducing a low-priced streaming “dongle” that people could plug into the back of their TV sets, similar to Amazon’s Fire Stick or Google’s Chromecast, people familiar with the project said. The dongle could make Apple’s upcoming video streaming service—which will only be available on Apple devices such as the Apple TV, iPhones and iPads—more widely available. The service will be rolled out globally next year. Shows made originally for Apple will be free on the service.

Currently, Apple sells the Apple TV 4K starting at $179. That's quite a bit more than dongles like the FireTV 4K (currently on sale for $34.99) and the 4K Roku Streaming Stick+ at $59.99. Recent rumors have suggested that owners of Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, will get access to the streaming service for free. However, it seems unlikely that Apple would provide free access to original content with just the purchase of a low cost dongle.
