A dozen of the world's leading mobile phone operators have formed an alliance to rival the App Store, according to a Times Online report.
Orange, Telefonica, AT&T and nine others are set to announce an open technology platform designed to deliver applications to mobile phone users.
The announcement will be made tomorrow at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and is said to have support from Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and LG.
The Times says Vodafone has yet to commit to the new alliance. It is collaboring with Verizon Wireless, China Mobile and Softbank of Japan to create a common technology standard.
I guess this is to push apps for WinMo7, WebOs, Symbian, Maemo and maybe Android (the last 3 have their own market apps) but since a lot of ppl still buy iPhones thinking that it's a real smartphone and when they find out is not then they return it, also that plenty of ppl ask for the option to install apps as a point for purchase (yup some ppl asks for those things but never ever get to use them).
