Apple supplier Foxconn has apologized for a 'technical error' that resulted in violent worker protests this week, reports BBC.
Last month, a COVID lockdown resulted in numerous workers breaking out the facility to go home. Foxconn then launched a recruitment drive to find new workers with promises of generous bonuses.
This week protests broke out after workers claimed their contracts were changed so they "could not get the subsidy promised." There have also been allegations that workers were quarantined without food.
Today, Foxconn released a statement saying that a "technical error occurred during the onboarding process" and promising that the pay of new recruits would be "the same as agreed [in the] official recruitment posters".
The company also says it has been in constant communication with affected employees and is doing its best "to actively solve the concerns and reasonable demands of employees".
Notably, BBC reports that Zhengzhou authorities have ordered the city back into lockdown today. China has a zero-COVID strategy which has seriously hampered iPhone production leading to widespread shortages of the iPhone 14 Pro/Max. The latest lockdown is likely to constrain supply even further going into the important holiday season.
