Apple has allegedly accelerated development of 'smart ring' technology ahead of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Ring, according to ETNews. The site says Apple has been continuously filing patents related to the 'Apple Ring', likely driven by the Galaxy Ring's anticipated launch later this year.

Samsung teased its ring at an Unpacked event in January 2024. It is expected to support health and sleep information tracking and measurement, remote control of other devices, and wireless payments, equipped with blood flow measurement and electrocardiogram functions. Currently in the prototype production stage, the ring is purportedly scheduled to start mass production in the second quarter, with around eight different sizes available.

Although smart rings offer functionality that is already available in smartwatches, they could offer a more discreet and convenient option for continuous wear, and they may enable precise biometric data collection without the bulkiness or frequent need for recharging that smartwatches often require.

Sources tell ETNews that Apple is close to pre-commercial development...

Apple is also accelerating the development of the Apple Ring by consecutively registering related patents. In November last year, it filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for an electronic system applicable to smart rings, a technology that allows communication with other devices through short-range wireless communication circuits. It is presumed to be used for controlling smartphones, tablets, etc.

An industry insider said, "Apple appears to be close to pre-commercial development, having consistently filed patents related to smart rings for several years."

Apple often pursue development of products and technology that never make it to market; however, if the Galaxy Ring is a success, perhaps an Apple Ring could materialize. Please download the iClarified app or follow iClarified on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and RSS for more updates!
