President Trump accused the EU of levying fines on Apple and other U.S. tech firms as a form of taxation during remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, today.
The newly inaugurated President specifically pointed to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling that Apple must pay Ireland €13 billion in taxes—the largest corporate tax fine in history—as well as the recent €2.4 billion fine against Google for abusing its dominant position in online general searches and specialized product searches.
----- They took court cases with Apple, and they supposedly won a case that most people didn't think was much of a case. They won $15 or $16 billion from Apple. They won billions from Google. I think they're after Facebook for billions and billions.
These are American companies. Whether you like them or not, they're American companies, and they shouldn't be doing that. And that's, as far as I'm concerned, it's a form of taxation.
So we have some very big complaints with the EU. -----
Back in October, Trump claimed that Apple CEO Tim Cook had called him regarding the $15 billion fine imposed on the company by the EU. At the time, he purportedly said, "I'm not going to let them take advantage of our companies. That won't be happening."
Cook has been recognized for fostering a strong working relationship with Trump, which helped Apple navigate trade tariffs that could have impacted its business. Last month, Cook reportedly met with Trump over dinner at the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach. While the details of their conversation remain unknown, it's likely the two discussed ongoing EU investigations into Apple, which could result in even more fines.
