YouTube announced today that it's bringing a Premium Lite subscription plan to the United States, offering a more affordable way for viewers to enjoy most videos without ads. Priced at $7.99 per month, the plan is part of an expansion that will also roll out to all users in current pilot countries—Thailand, Germany, and Australia—in the coming weeks.
The move comes as YouTube Music and Premium surpasses 125 million subscribers worldwide, including trial users. Premium Lite is designed for those who want an ad-free experience for most video content, covering categories like gaming, comedy, cooking, and educational videos. Unlike the full Premium plan, it doesn't include ad-free music, offline playback, or background play features, which remain exclusive to the higher-tier subscription.
YouTube says it has been testing Premium Lite to fine-tune its balance of features and cost, aiming to appeal to viewers who want fewer interruptions without committing to the full Premium package. The company emphasized that this expansion not only enhances the viewing experience but also generates additional revenue streams for creators and partners.
YouTube's Chief Product Officer, Johanna Voolich, shares more details about the Premium Lite offering in the video below...
