Spotify is adding a new 'Messages' feature to its mobile app, giving users a dedicated space inside the app to share and chat about music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The company says the feature is designed to make word-of-mouth recommendations more seamless, and it will begin rolling out this week in select markets.
Messages work as one-on-one conversations where you can share content directly from the 'Now Playing' view and respond with text or emojis. Chats can be started with people you've already connected with on the platform through playlists, Blends, or a Family plan. Spotify emphasizes that Messages complements, rather than replaces, sharing through apps like Instagram, iMessage, and others.
Users remain in control of their experience. Message requests can be accepted or declined, unwanted contacts can be blocked, and the feature can be turned off entirely in settings. Conversations are protected by encryption, and Spotify says it will rely on both automated detection and human moderation to address harmful or unlawful content.
The rollout comes as Spotify has been making other major moves on iOS. The company recently submitted an updated app after a U.S. court found Apple in "willful violation" of an anti-steering injunction. Apple then approved the changes, allowing Spotify to finally show pricing information and link U.S. users to its website for purchases.
Messages will be available for Free and Premium users aged 16 and older, with Spotify planning to refine the feature and expand it globally in the coming months.
