EU Fires Back at Apple, Accuses Company of Contesting 'Every Little Bit' of DMA

The European Commission has fired back at Apple's recent statement calling for the repeal of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), accusing the company of undermining cooperation and contesting the landmark tech law "every step of the way." The sharp response follows Apple's public criticism that the DMA is creating a worse and riskier experience for its users in the European Union.

Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said the EU was "not surprised" by Apple's position. "Apple has simply contested every little bit of the DMA since its entry into application," Regnier stated, adding that this "undermines the company's narrative of wanting to be fully cooperative with the Commission."

The spokesperson also claimed that Apple had "snubbed" the Commission's efforts to engage in productive discussions about compliance. "Results of this positive engagement? After two months, Apple came back and asked us to scrap everything," he said.

Regnier acknowledged the business realities at play but drew a firm line. "We of course fully get companies want to defend their profits at all costs, but that's not what the DMA is about."

He also referenced the €500 million fine Apple received in April and warned that more action could be coming. "And that's not all, there is another ongoing case where, again, all options remain on the table," Regnier noted.

The ongoing friction comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has stated he will implement tariffs on countries with digital rules he views as discriminatory toward American companies.

In response to the Commission's latest comments, an Apple spokesperson referred back to its earlier statement, which said the company wants "our users in Europe to enjoy the same innovations at the same time as everyone else, and we're fighting to make that possible — even when the DMA slows us down."
