OpenAI has announced Sora 2, its next-generation video model, and launched a new social app for iPhone called 'Sora' to go with it.
The company is calling it a "GPT-3.5 moment for video," signaling a major leap in realism and physics. OpenAI highlights its ability to model failure, like a missed basketball shot rebounding correctly, rather than warping reality to fit a prompt. For the first time, the model can also generate a complete audio track, including background soundscapes, speech, and sound effects.
The new 'Sora' app, now available on the App Store, is a social platform built around the new model. It allows users to create videos from text, remix others' content, and discover new generations in a feed. A key feature is 'cameos,' which lets a user inject a realistic portrayal of themselves into any Sora-generated scene after a one-time video and audio recording.
The launch deepens the partnership between the two companies. Apple already uses OpenAI's models, including the recently released GPT-5, to handle complex queries for Siri and other Apple Intelligence features. The collaboration has become particularly notable as Apple works through its own AI challenges, with its most advanced Siri features now delayed until 2026. The launch also comes as OpenAI expands into hardware, having recently acquired an AI device startup from former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
OpenAI says it is launching the app with safety controls, including natural language feed customization and parental controls. The company also states it is not optimizing for time spent in-feed, but rather for creation.
The Sora app is available now as an invite-based download in the U.S. and Canada, with a global expansion planned. ChatGPT Pro users will also get access to an experimental, higher-quality 'Sora 2 Pro' model.
