OpenAI Launches GPT-5 With Built-In 'Thinking' and Major Upgrades [Video]

OpenAI has unveiled GPT-5, its latest large language model, in a major update to ChatGPT. The release replaces previous default models and introduces a new system that adjusts its approach depending on the complexity of a question. GPT-5 is designed to deliver faster replies for straightforward queries, while taking more time to "think" through topics that require in-depth analysis. The rollout begins today for all ChatGPT users.

At its core, GPT-5 uses a real-time router that sends simple questions to a fast, efficient model and more challenging ones to a deeper reasoning mode—dubbed "GPT-5 thinking." The move marks a change from what the company originally planned; in April, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the o3 and o4-mini reasoning models would arrive first, with GPT-5 following a few months later. Instead, those capabilities have been folded into a single, smarter system.

OpenAI is touting major improvements across coding, math, writing, health, and visual perception. The company says it has reduced hallucinations and strengthened coding skills, claiming GPT-5 can build responsive websites and games from a single prompt. It's also said to be better at creative writing, helping to turn rough ideas into well-structured text. For health questions, GPT-5 can flag potential issues and ask follow-up questions before offering advice.

The update is particularly relevant for Apple users, as the company already integrates ChatGPT to handle complex queries in Siri and its system-wide Writing Tools. A more capable GPT-5 stands to make those features more responsive and accurate, which is especially notable as Apple works through its own AI challenges, including a major Siri overhaul now targeted for 2026. The launch also comes as OpenAI expands into hardware, having recently acquired an AI device startup from former Apple design chief Jony Ive.

GPT-5 is now the default model in ChatGPT, replacing GPT-4o and earlier versions. Plus subscribers get higher usage limits, while Pro subscribers gain access to GPT-5 Pro, which offers extended reasoning for more comprehensive answers. Free users will also have access to GPT-5 but will be switched to a smaller GPT-5 mini model once usage limits are reached.
