Aqara has officially released the Smart Lock U400, a new deadbolt that leverages Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology to enable faster, more precise hands-free entry. Announced at CES 2026, the lock is among the first consumer options to use UWB for Apple home key, addressing the lag and security limitations common to Bluetooth-based proximity unlocking.

The U400 uses UWB to track location with centimeter-level precision, a significant upgrade over Bluetooth signal-strength estimation. This precision lets the lock detect exactly when an authorized user steps up to the door, unlocking automatically without needing a code or a tap on a phone. By calculating Time of Flight and Angle of Arrival, the system can tell if a user is standing outside or inside the house. That spatial awareness prevents the door from unlocking accidentally when someone walks past it from the living room and helps protect against relay attacks that plague simpler wireless locks.

For Apple users, integration is deep. The lock supports hands-free unlocking with home key in Apple Wallet, allowing the door to open simply by approaching with a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch. Built on Thread and Matter-certified, the U400 connects directly to Apple Home without requiring a separate Aqara hub, as long as a Thread Border Router such as an Apple TV 4K or HomePod is present. The lock is also Aliro-ready, supporting the emerging industry standard for interoperable mobile credentials.

Aqara includes multiple backup entry methods to ensure access is always available. The U400 features a fingerprint reader for biometric unlocking, a keypad for passcodes, and NFC card support. A mechanical key slot is hidden behind a cover for emergencies. The lock also supports voice control through Siri via Apple Home.

On the hardware side, the lock carries an IP65 rating for resistance to dust and rain. Power is supplied by a rechargeable 4,880 mAh lithium-ion battery, which Aqara rates for up to six months of use per charge. A built-in gyroscope enables automatic locking by detecting the door's position.

The Aqara Smart Lock U400 is available now in the US and Canada and can be purchased on Amazon. It ships in black, silver, shadow black, and satin nickel finishes.
