Apple is Quietly Positioning John Ternus as Its Next CEO

Apple appears to be quietly lining up its next CEO. With Tim Cook steering the ship for nearly 15 years and the company's 50th anniversary on the horizon, the succession plan is coming into sharper focus. John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, has emerged as a leading contender to take over the top job. That's the primary takeaway from a detailed Bloomberg profile mapping out the executive shifts currently happening inside Cupertino.



At 50, Ternus offers a key advantage: time. He is significantly younger than most of Apple's executive team, offering the board a leader who could potentially hold the role for well over a decade. He has spent most of his career at Apple. After starting out working on computer monitors, he led the physical design of the original iPad and eventually took control of Mac development. Cook has openly stated his desire to mentor an internal successor, and Ternus fits the bill.


The transition is becoming increasingly visible. Ternus's footprint inside Apple has expanded drastically over the last few months, a very public signal of his trajectory. He recently absorbed oversight of the entire design team, strengthening the link between engineering and design. He was also handed the keys to a secretive robotics division that is currently building a tabletop smart display with a motorized screen.

Apple is actively putting him in the media spotlight, too. During the recent MacBook Neo launch in New York, Ternus handled the presentation and followed it up with a solo interview on Good Morning America—responsibilities typically handled by Cook. He has also served as the face of the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 rollouts.

Colleagues view him as a pragmatic, meticulous engineer who empowers his staff. It's a management style that closely mirrors Cook's approach. He is also known for being fairly risk-averse, generally avoiding moves that might upset Apple's highly profitable status quo. That caution has proven prescient. Ternus pushed back against building a car, arguing it would drain engineering resources, and he was highly skeptical of the Vision Pro from the start.



His day-to-day involvement looks very different from his predecessors. While Steve Jobs obsessed over individual app icons and Cook focuses heavily on supply chain logistics, Ternus is deeply rooted in actual product development. His close working relationship with software chief Craig Federighi is credited with ending years of bitter infighting between the hardware and software divisions. That alliance was absolutely crucial during the Mac's massive transition to Apple silicon.


He isn't without his critics. The profile points out that Ternus was a main driving force behind both the polarizing Touch Bar and the widely criticized butterfly keyboard. His management style also drew scrutiny leading up to the Vision Pro launch. When engineers realized the newest AirPods Pro lacked a wireless frequency needed for the headset's ultra-low latency audio, Apple had to rush out a revised hardware version. The slip up meant early Vision Pro buyers had to spend another $250 for compatible earbuds. Rather than immediately fixing the process, Ternus reportedly alienated staff by focusing on finding someone to blame, which led to the reassignment of a senior AirPods executive.

Looking ahead, his biggest test will be artificial intelligence. Apple's upcoming Siri overhaul is so far behind schedule that it is expected to depend on technology from Google. To catch up, Ternus is pushing a new wave of hardware. He is overseeing development of camera-equipped smart glasses and AirPods that use computer vision to scan a user's environment. He is also driving work on a large foldable iPad and an edge-to-edge iPhone slated for 2027.

While Ternus is the obvious favorite, the succession process is not finalized. Sabih Khan, who stepped in after the previous chief operating officer retired, is highly regarded for his operational expertise and remains a candidate. For now, Cook is keeping his exact retirement timeline quiet. He still works from Cupertino most weekdays, though insiders expect that when he does eventually step down, he will transition to a chairman role to manage Apple's complex political relationships.
