Amazon in Talks to Buy Globalstar for $9B, Complicating Apple's Satellite Deal

Amazon is in talks to acquire the satellite telecommunications group Globalstar in a deal valued at approximately $9 billion. The acquisition would mark a significant step in Amazon's effort to build out its own low Earth orbit satellite network and compete with Elon Musk's Starlink. According to the Financial Times, the negotiations are particularly complex because of Apple's significant ownership and operational control over Globalstar's network.

Apple currently holds a 20 percent stake in Globalstar following a $1.5 billion investment in 2024. This followed an earlier $450 million commitment from Apple's Advanced Manufacturing Fund to help build out infrastructure for the iPhone 14's satellite features. Under existing agreements, Globalstar is required to reserve 85 percent of its network capacity for Apple, supporting features like Emergency SOS via satellite and Messages via satellite.

The acquisition would give Amazon a stronger position as it works to expand its "Leo" satellite constellation, also known as Project Kuiper. The company has launched more than 180 satellites so far, a figure that remains far below Starlink's 10,000 active satellites. Amazon has already lined up major commercial agreements, including a deal to bring free high-speed Wi-Fi to Delta flights beginning in 2028.

For Apple, Globalstar is central to its long-term satellite connectivity plans. Beyond emergency services, Apple is developing satellite-powered maps and photo messaging to extend connectivity in areas with limited coverage. The company is also expected to introduce its in-house C2 modem in future iPhone models, supporting emerging satellite standards.

Globalstar's stock has surged amid takeover speculation, pushing its market capitalization to about $9 billion. The company reported 2025 revenue of $273 million, up 9 percent year-over-year. Despite the ongoing talks, no final agreement has been reached. Discussions could still shift or collapse entirely, especially given the need for Amazon and Apple to reach an accord regarding Globalstar's prior commitments to the iPhone ecosystem.

Globalstar has stated that it does not comment on industry speculation, and both Amazon and Apple have declined to provide official comments on the potential transaction.
