Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class action lawsuit over delayed Siri Apple Intelligence features that were promoted alongside the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 lineup. The proposed settlement would provide payouts to U.S. customers who purchased eligible devices expecting access to the new Siri Apple Intelligence capabilities.
The lawsuit accused Apple of false advertising and unfair competition, alleging the company promoted a smarter, more personalized Siri before some of the headline Apple Intelligence features were ready to ship. The delay followed reports of internal performance issues that forced Apple to push back certain Siri capabilities beyond their original timeframe.
Under the proposed terms, Apple will create a $250 million non-reversionary fund. U.S. residents who purchased an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, any model in the iPhone 16 lineup, or the iPhone 16e between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, are eligible to file a claim. The base payout is set at $25 per eligible device, though that amount could rise to as much as $95 or fall proportionally depending on how many valid claims are submitted and how much is deducted for legal and administrative costs.
To qualify for a payment, class members must submit a claim form certifying they purchased an eligible iPhone in the United States during the covered period, expected to receive certain Siri Apple Intelligence features at the time of purchase, and did not receive them. The court granted preliminary approval of the agreement today, with official notices expected to go out within the next 45 days. The settlement website is expected to be SmartphoneAISettlement.com.
Apple has not admitted any wrongdoing and maintains that it acted in good faith, noting the decision to settle was made to avoid the time and expense of prolonged litigation. In a statement addressing the agreement, the company emphasized the broad range of Apple Intelligence tools it has successfully delivered over the past year.
"Since the launch of Apple Intelligence, we have introduced dozens of features across many languages that are integrated across Apple's platforms, relevant to what users do every day, and built with privacy protections at every step," an Apple spokesperson said. "These include Visual Intelligence, Live Translation, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Clean Up and many more."
"Apple has reached a settlement to resolve claims related to the availability of two additional features. We resolved this matter to stay focused on doing what we do best, delivering the most innovative products and services to our users."
