Google is making a renewed push into the laptop market with the announcement of Googlebook, a new category of portable computers built around its Gemini artificial intelligence platform. Arriving more than 15 years after the debut of the cloud-focused Chromebook, the new hardware line combines ChromeOS with parts of the Android tech stack in what Google describes as a shift from an operating system to an "intelligence system."
The software relies on portions of Android, bringing native access to Google Play applications alongside the Chrome browser. Google says the architecture is designed to better connect desktop and mobile experiences. A new Quick Access feature lets users view, search, and insert files directly from a paired Android phone without manually transferring them to local storage. The integration also extends to active mobile apps, allowing users to interact with them directly from the laptop screen.
At the center of the interface is Magic Pointer, a new cursor tool developed in collaboration with Google DeepMind. Wiggling the cursor activates Gemini, which then provides contextual suggestions based on whatever is currently visible on screen. Users can point at a date in an email to create a meeting or select multiple images to visualize them together. The desktop also incorporates generative interface elements through a feature called Create your Widget. Similar to Google's recently announced AI-generated widgets for Android, Googlebook users can create personalized desktop dashboards using simple text prompts. Gemini can pull information from Gmail, Calendar, and the web to build custom layouts tailored to specific tasks or events.
Google says it is partnering with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to manufacture the first Googlebooks. The company says every model will use premium materials and feature a distinctive glowbar integrated into the chassis.
The launch positions Googlebook as Google's latest attempt to compete more directly in the premium notebook segment. Apple has continued expanding its Mac lineup in recent years, recently introducing the more affordable MacBook Neo while also updating its higher-end portable systems. Google has also continued supporting macOS users directly, recently launching a dedicated Gemini app for Mac.
Specific pricing, hardware configurations, and detailed specifications for the Googlebook are expected to be revealed ahead of the official retail launch this fall.
