Apple has officially stopped signing iOS 26.4.2 and iPadOS 26.4.2 for all compatible iPhone and iPad models. The move prevents users from downgrading to the older firmware following the recent public release of iOS 26.5.
The now-unsigned iOS 26.4.2 was released in late April as a minor maintenance update. It carried build number 23E261 and focused primarily on underlying security patches and system stability to address lingering performance issues.
With the signing window closed, devices that have already upgraded to iOS 26.5 can no longer be restored to the previous version. Unsigned firmware fails the server-side verification required for an installation to proceed. Apple routinely stops signing older code to ensure customers remain protected against newly discovered vulnerabilities and to maintain compatibility with the latest features.
The current iOS 26.5 release introduced several highly anticipated capabilities. It brought end-to-end encryption for cross-platform RCS messaging between iPhone and Android users, a new Suggested Places feature in Apple Maps, and a dynamic Pride Luminance wallpaper.
For most users, this change will go unnoticed. It mainly affects those who run into severe bugs on the newest software and hope to revert, as well as the jailbreak community, which often relies on remaining on older firmware versions to exploit system vulnerabilities.
