Ferrari has officially unveiled the Luce, its highly anticipated first all-electric sports car, marking a major milestone for the Maranello marque with a design heavily shaped by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Created in collaboration with Ive and Marc Newson at the design collective LoveFrom, the vehicle introduces a new architecture and interface while maintaining the performance standards expected from the Italian automaker.

The debut follows a multi-year collaboration between Exor and LoveFrom. Working alongside the Ferrari Design Studio led by Flavio Manzoni, LoveFrom was given broad creative freedom to help shape the car's visual language. The exterior features a large glass house that extends below the beltline, flanked by floating front and rear aerodynamic wings. Thanks to the packaging advantages of its electric platform, the Luce accommodates four doors and five seats, making it Ferrari's first five-seat production car. The vehicle also uses the largest staggered wheel diameters ever fitted to a series-production Ferrari road car, measuring 23 inches in the front and 24 inches at the rear.

Inside the cabin, the interface focuses on simplicity and physical controls. Expanding on an early look at the interior provided earlier this year, the dashboard combines precision-engineered mechanical buttons, dials, and switches with multifunctional digital displays developed with Samsung. The steering assembly features a binnacle that moves directly with the steering wheel to optimize viewing angles. In a unique twist for the automotive industry, the car's physical key is constructed from Corning Gorilla Glass and incorporates an E Ink display that draws power only when changing color. Docking the key starts the car and unlocks the shifter.

Powering the Luce is a bespoke 800-volt architecture utilizing four permanent magnet synchronous engines developed using technology derived from the F80 and Ferrari's motorsport programs, enabling fully independent torque control at each wheel. The setup delivers a maximum power output of 1050 cv. This allows the 2260 kg vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and hit 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed exceeding 310 km/h. A 122 kWh battery pack integrated into the floorpan provides a driving range of over 530 kilometers and supports fast charging up to 350 kW.

Ferrari says the sound system is based on real mechanical vibrations rather than synthesized engine audio. A precision accelerometer mounted on the axle captures vibrations from the rotating components. The signal is then filtered, equalized, and amplified through an external and internal speaker system, operating much like an electric guitar. The volume changes dynamically based on the driving mode selected via the e-Manettino switch and the use of the steering wheel paddles.

The engineering also extends to aerodynamics and thermal management. Active grilles shield the radiators to reduce drag when cooling is not required, and an active suspension system can lower the front end by 10 mm at speed to maximize efficiency. The chassis combines hollow aluminum castings and extrusions, with the battery housing increasing torsional rigidity by 35 percent compared to previous four-door models.

The launch also marks one of the most ambitious hardware collaborations yet from LoveFrom since Ive departed Apple, arriving as the design collective continues work on next-generation AI devices with OpenAI.

They made an electric car and put a Ferrari badge on it. What they should have done was make a Ferrari electric.
