ZERODIUM Offers $1 Million Dollars for Jailbreak of iOS 9

Posted September 21, 2015 at 4:10pm by iClarified
ZERODIUM has announced that it will pay $1 million dollars (USD) for an exclusive browser-based untethered jailbreak of iOS 9.

Apple iOS, like all operating system, is often affected by critical security vulnerabilities, however due to the increasing number of security improvements and the effectiveness of exploit mitigations in place, Apple's iOS is currently the most secure mobile OS. But don't be fooled, secure does not mean unbreakable, it just means that iOS has currently the highest cost and complexity of vulnerability exploitation and here's where the Million Dollar iOS 9 Bug Bounty comes into play.

ZERODIUM says it's willing to pay out a total of three million U.S. dollars ($3,000,000.00) in rewards for iOS exploits/jailbreaks. It will pay out one million to each team who submits an exclusive, browser-based, and untethered jailbreak for the latest Apple iOS 9 operating system and devices.

The program is open until October 31st, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. EDT, and may be terminated prior to its expiration if the total payout to researchers reaches three million U.S. dollars ($3,000,000.00).

This is VERY worrying for all users... Including the ones that likes to jailbreak. More info on who is Zerodium and the person behind it check www.wired.com /2015/09/spy-agency-contractor-puts-1m-bounty-iphone-hack. I was always an enthusiast of jailbreak. From now on I'll probably stay inside Apple skirts...

It could be apple but why pay? Why not wait until an actual jailbreak comes out then study the code then. That's exactly what they do everytime a new jailbreak comes out. They study it then patch what exploits they can. I think it's a rich company or business person that's willing to spend the money for exclusive rights, and probably future rights to any of the iOS 9 exploits and then they'll try and sell it which means they can charge anything and will probably get it too. Things like this ruin the community when big money people try to profit from it. If it's cheap then maybe but I'd just wait for a free one. But with all this Chinese Xcode hacking going what can you trust anymore? Who knows what's in the code you use to jailbreak. They could have access to every jailbroken device. You never know. This is one reason I haven't jailbroken since the Chinese took over.

Sounds like the "One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge" publicity stunt by the magician, The Amazing Randi.

"Private Jailbreaks" translate to "We plan to sell it to foreign governments and police departments to help them spy on your activities." That's why Apple needs to halt this idiotic Whack-a-Mole approach to jailbreaking, and offer a secure "Yes I want to jailbreak" or "No I don't" option.

Pay the money, we want a jailbreak as soon as possible

Exclusive.... That means just for them. This is not good news. It means that any exploits currently being sat on for a public JB may end up being sold instead of used for a public jailbreak.

Exactly. Then resold to apple for more profit so they can close the exploits that were looked over. In Turn, screwing the people out of any possible Jailbreaking until a new iOS update comes out that may contain different vulnerabilities.

Honestly cabe I don't think apple would pay for exploits. I think they'd wait until a release then study the code and patch it like they always do. But you could be right. You never know nowadays.
