Sharp May Start Building $7 Billion U.S. Plant in the First Half of 2017 [Report]

Sharp is taking the lead on a project outlined by Foxconn and could start building a $7 billion plant in the United States in the first half of 2017, reports Reuters.

The news comes as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe prepares to visit President Donald Trump in the United States. Abe will reportedly unveil investments to create as many as 700,000 U.S. jobs.


"The investment will be by a Japanese consortium that will also include manufacturing equipment makers," said a source.

Apple is in talks with Sharp to supply OLED displays for future generation iPhones, according to recent reports. However, Sharp's production of OLED displays isn't expected to begin until 2018.
