Apple has unveiled a new 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by its next-generation M5 chip. The update brings a significant boost in AI performance, a next-generation GPU, and a faster, more efficient CPU, and up to 24 hours of battery life. The new model retains its starting price of $1,599 and is available for pre-order today.
The announcement follows a teaser from Apple marketing chief Greg Joswiak yesterday, which hinted that "something powerful" was on the way. The launch also lines up with recent FCC filings that appeared to confirm the new MacBook Pro, alongside other M5-powered devices.
At the heart of the new laptop is the M5 chip, built on third-generation 3-nanometer technology. It features a 10-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each core, which Apple says delivers up to 3.5 times the AI performance of the M4. The M5's 10-core CPU is up to 20 percent faster in multithreaded tasks, while the enhanced 16-core Neural Engine and over 150GB/s of unified memory bandwidth allow the MacBook Pro to handle larger AI models entirely on-device.
Apple says the new hardware enables up to 1.6x faster graphics performance and higher frame rates in games compared to the M4 model. Storage performance has also been improved, with up to 2x faster SSD speeds for tasks like importing RAW photos. The laptop runs macOS Tahoe with Apple Intelligence built in.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro retains its Liquid Retina XDR display, which now offers an optional nano-texture glass finish. It also includes a 12MP Center Stage camera, studio-quality mics, and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio. Hardware is rounded out with two Thunderbolt ports, support for up to two external displays, and 16GB of unified memory in the starting configuration.
For those upgrading from older models, Apple highlighted significant performance gains. Compared to M1, the M5 offers up to 6x faster AI performance and up to 2x faster CPU performance. When compared to Intel-based systems, the company claims up to 86x faster AI performance and up to 5.5x faster CPU performance, along with up to 14 additional hours of battery life.
The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 is available to pre-order today in space black and silver, with availability beginning Wednesday, October 22. It starts at $1,599 for the base configuration, or $1,499 with education savings.
