OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind the AI Mac app Sky, in a move that will bring the app's deep macOS integration directly into ChatGPT. Sky is designed as an AI assistant that floats over the desktop, understanding on-screen context to help with tasks like writing, coding, and planning. The entire Sky team will join OpenAI.
In its announcement, OpenAI framed the deal as part of a larger vision to make ChatGPT a proactive assistant rather than just a reactive chatbot. The company said Sky's deep integration with macOS will accelerate its goal of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day. Sky's co-founder and CEO Ari Weinstein described the app as an "AI experience that floats over your desktop to help you think and create."
The move puts OpenAI more squarely on Apple's turf, as both companies race to build AI assistants that operate directly within the operating system. Apple, for its part, is still working to catch up after its most advanced Siri features were delayed until 2026. The acquisition also comes as Apple leans on OpenAI's models to handle complex queries for Siri, while simultaneously encouraging developers to build new intelligent app experiences with its own Foundation Models framework.
OpenAI says it will share more updates as it works to integrate Sky's capabilities into ChatGPT.
