Apple has released new details on the developer tools it is providing to help apps comply with Texas's upcoming age assurance law, SB2420. In an announcement today, the company outlined new APIs and testing capabilities, while also reiterating its concerns that the law could undermine user privacy by requiring the collection of sensitive personal information.
The Texas law, which takes effect January 1, 2026, will require age assurance for all new Apple Accounts created in the state. Users under 18 will have to join a Family Sharing group, and a parent or guardian will need to provide consent for all app downloads, purchases, and significant changes to an app. Parents will also have the ability to revoke their consent at any time.
To help developers meet these requirements, Apple is rolling out several new APIs. The updated Declared Age Range API will provide an app with a user's age category and a signal indicating how their age was verified. A new Significant Change API will allow developers to trigger a parental consent request when major changes are made to an app. Developers can also now use a new property in StoreKit to automatically check for age rating changes and configure a server notification to learn when a parent has revoked consent.
Apple is encouraging developers to review the documentation and begin implementing the new APIs. The company also noted it will share details on future tools to help developers meet similar legal obligations in Utah, Louisiana, and Brazil.
